Following the sequencing of the human genome, there has been talk for a long time of launching a similar program for the human proteome (The Human Proteome Project, HPP). But the objectives of such a program, its structure as a research project and financing for it still needed to be defined.

Under the leadership of HUPO (the Human Proteome Organization) a working group was set up in October 2009 and resulted in the defining of the HPP. The main lines in this project are described in an article to be published in Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. HPP is based on local initiatives, which are often structured on the scale of a country, steered by scientists who will propose projects that make it possible to increase our knowledge on human proteins, and this, systematically, for the entire proteome. An organization by chromosome is suggested, so as to cover all of the coded proteins in the genome. This organization will go in line with cross-referenced information between the working groups in order to guarantee protein annotation in a biological context.

In France, several laboratories and institutions are suggesting a launching of a national initiative within the framework of the HPP. One chromosome could be chosen in priority (Chr. 14) and be used as a pilot reference for the projects. Such an initiative would allow France to make a visible contribution, and therefore a significant place within the HPP international consortium.

In this context, the objective of the inaugural conference of the HPP in France is to bring together all of the scientists that want to participate in this major project, whether through bioinformatic or experimental approaches, or whether on a large or targeted scale; with the scientific objective being to move forward in the exploration of the human proteome.
Enclosed you will find the final program for the inaugural conference of the initiative on the "Human Proteome Project – HPP", in France.
