Situation in Guinea

As of 12 October 2014,* 1471 confirmed, probable or suspected cases, including 843 deaths, have been reported in Guinea. The evolving epidemiological situation is of concern. 15 of the 34 prefectures have reported cases in the last 21 days, and since the beginning of August, we have observed a substantial increase in the number of cases from the districts affected.

Request for Assistance

Given how the situation is evolving, we are asking GOARN partners to identify French-speaking experts that can participate in operations to control the epidemic in Guinea. Attached you will find a document describing the Strategy for Increasing the Response Developed by the Coordination Unit in Conakry. The immediate human resource needs are detailed in Table 1.

Table 1. Overall needs for staff with various expertise in Guinea, by prefecture

You will find attached the terms of reference (in French) for the positions of epidemiologist, data and social mobilisation manager and logistician, and in English for the other positions.

As part of the response coordinated by WHO, other partners, especially UNICEF, will meet the majority of needs in terms of social mobilisation. These positions do not therefore appear in the present report.

It is also necessary to anticipate replacements for the staff who can fulfil the roles described above and their deployment in the field for the next 4 months.
A 6-week period of deployment is planned, with a minimum of 4 weeks on site. In the interest of resource planning, please submit your offers of support to this address: goarn@who.int, with the following information:

  • CV de(s) candidat(e)(s), décrivant leur expérience professionnelle pertinente vis-à-vis du poste et une copie du passeport ;
  • Le rôle proposé sur le terrain (ex. épidémiologie) ;
  • Durée de disponibilité pour une mission (ex. 5 semaines) ;
  • Dates de disponibilité (ex. à partir du 25 octobre).

As usual for deployments under GOARN (Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network), WHO will be responsible for per diem funding and travel. For further information please refer to the document describing the Terms and Conditions of GOARN deployments (attached). WHO and the GOARN Operational Support Team (OST) thank you, and all GOARN partners who have offered to support the response.
