Etienne Hirsch appointed Director of the multi-agency thematic institute (ITMO), neurosciences

Etienne Hirsch, 54 years of age, has just been appointed Director of the multi-agency thematic institute (ITMO) neurosciences, cognitive sciences, neurology and psychiatry, as from April, 2012.
Currently Assistant Director at the research center of the Brain and Spine Institute (CRICM), specialist in Parkinson’s disease, he will be taking over from Alexis Brice, who has been called to other tasks.

Born on March 18th, 1958 in Paris, Etienne Hirsch graduated from the Pierre et Marie Curie University (UPMC - Paris VI). He has a master’s degree in molecular and cellular biology and a PhD in neurobiology.

Currently Research Director at the CNRS, he was at the head of several research units before being appointed Assistant Director of the Brain and Spine Institute research center at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in January, 2009.

He was at the same time President of the science council of the Federation for Brain Research (FRC) and President of the Neurosciences Society up until the end of 2009.

He is a member of various scientific selection panels, as well as assistant chief editor of the review Neuroscience.

Etienne Hirsch has won several awards for the quality of his research: The Tourette Syndrome Association Award in 1986, the Young Researcher Award, European Society for Neurochemistry in 1990, and the award “Grand prix de l’Académie de Sciences / Prix de la Fondation pour la Recherche Biomédicale Prix François Lhermitte” in 1999.

The new Director of the multi-agency thematic institute was also appointed the title of “Knight of the National Order of Merit” in 2009.

Heads of 4 other multi-agency thematic institutes will also be nominated as from June 1st, 2012

Jean-Claude Michalski, Inserm Research Director of the Structural and functional glycobiology unit in Lille, will be appointed Director of the ITMO, Molecular and structural bases of living organisms, taking over from Thierry Meinnel.

Laurent Kodjabachian, CNRS (French national center for scientific research) Research Director of the Developmental Biology Institute in Marseille Luminy, will be appointed Director of the ITMO, Cell biology development and evolution, taking over from André Le Bivic.

Thierry Grange, CNRS Research Director at the Jacques Monod Institute, will be appointed Director of the ITMO, Genetics, genomics and bioinformatics, taking over from Martine Defais.

Bernard Poulain, CNRS Research Director at the Institute of Cellular and Integrative Neurosciences in Strasbourg, will be appointed Director of the ITMO Neurosciences, cognitive sciences, neurology, psychiatry. He takes over from Bernard Bioulac, working alongside Etienne Hirsch.
